Pakistan’s thoughts on the Kurdistan referendum

Commenting on the recently held referendum in Iraq , Pakistan has said that it does not believe that the process was legitimate.

“The referendum violates the Iraqi constitution and therefore lacks any legitimacy,” Foreign Office spokesperson said in a statement on Monday. “It also presents a challenge to peace and security of Iraq and the entire region.”
Pakistan also said that the country fully supports the unity , sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq.
“It is therefore deeply concerned over the referendum held in the Iraqi Kurdistan region on 25 September 2017.”

Pakistan’s thoughts on the Kurdistan referendum

In a statement released by Iraqi Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani , the world was informed that the Kurds had voted yes to independence against the government in Baghdad.

Pakistan joined Iraq and a number of other countries to oppose the referendum.

Iraq considers the vote unconstitutional, especially as it was held not only within the Kurdish region itself but also on disputed territory held by Kurds elsewhere in northern Iraq.

Similarly, the United States, major European countries and neighbours Turkey and Iran strongly opposed the decision to hold the referendum. They said that the vote came at a most unfortunate time as everyone intended to focus on defeating Islamic State militants who are creating havoc all over the world.
