Bailable arrest warrants out against Nawaz Sharif for skipping court

After Nawaz Sharif again failed to appear in front of an accountability court, the court issued a bailable arrest warrant against him. Nawaz was asked to appear before the court in connection with the three references filed by NAB against him. The judge presiding over the ruling dismissed Nawaz Sharif’s application for exemption from personal appearance. For two of the references, warrants were issued against sharif while for the third one a notice was issued for sharif’s surety giver.

Sharif, in the application for this exemption, had pleaded that he had not been able to return to Pakistan because of his wife, Kulsoom Nawaz’s deteriorating health. Nawaz Sharif has been in London to be with his wife who is undergoing treatments for leukemia. The former PM’s counsel argued that Sharif was set to come to Pakistan to attend the ruling but had to stay back to perform Umrah for his wife after she was hospitalized in an emergency. He also argued that Sharif be exempted for 15 days and Zaafir Khan Tareen would instead represent Sharif as during the hearings. However, this application was rejected by the NAB’s Additional Deputy Prosecutor General, Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi who said that extensions had been granted earlier too and now Tareen would no longer represent Nawaz Sharif in any proceeding.
