Pakistan’s request denied by Facebook

Keeping in light the increasing blasphemy incidents in Pakistan Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan made a request to Facebook administration to link accounts with phone numbers which would make it easier to track down the user of that account . However it was denied in the name of protecting its customers rights .

This discussion took place when Facebook Vice President Joel Kaplan met with Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan last week.

However , The other request which was granted was to block blasphemous content and other hate material posted by users. Lately a lot of hateful content has been circulating on the internet and in an attempt to control this issue . Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan discussed various ways and methods through which blasphemous content could be removed from social media . One of them was to link Facebook accounts with the phone numbers to curb the usage of fake profiles to post blasphemous content and make it easy for authorities to trace users.

Facebook administration is truly concerned about the cases against Facebook users currently pending in courts which is why this was the first time a member of Facebook administration visited Pakistan to discuss methods for addressing the issue of misuse of social media platforms .

The other issues which were discussed were “She Means Business” and “iChamp” digital literacy project.
