{"id":13514,"date":"2025-04-14T14:08:38","date_gmt":"2025-04-14T09:08:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakalerts.net\/english\/?p=13514"},"modified":"2025-04-14T14:08:38","modified_gmt":"2025-04-14T09:08:38","slug":"proposal-to-impose-20-health-tax-on-bakery-and-confectionery-items","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakalerts.net\/english\/?p=13514","title":{"rendered":"Proposal to Impose 20% Health Tax on Bakery and Confectionery Items"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-start=\"87\" data-end=\"225\"><strong>A proposal has been put forward to impose a 20% health tax on bakery and confectionery items in the upcoming budget.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"227\" data-end=\"473\">The Ministry of Health has suggested to the government that in the 2025\u201326 budget, hundreds of processed and ultra-processed foods and beverages \u2014 commonly referred to as bakery and confectionery items \u2014 should be subjected to a 20% health tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"475\" data-end=\"617\">For certain items that are already under a 20% Federal Excise Duty, it has been proposed to increase the rate to 40% in the upcoming budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"619\" data-end=\"785\">It has also been recommended that to discourage the consumption of unhealthy products, the tax rate should gradually be increased to 50% by the fiscal year 2028\u201329.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"787\" data-end=\"1068\">A report titled &#8220;Taxation Policy on Sustainable Ultra-Processed Foods and Beverages for Public Health&#8221; has been prepared and shared with the Ministry of Health.
