For the first time in its 116-year history, the United Kingdom\u2019s secret intelligence service, MI6, will be led by a woman. BAE Systems executive and intelligence veteran Madeleine \u201cBlaze\u201d Metreweli has been named the new Chief of MI6. She will take over the role from the current Chief, Sir Richard Moore, in September this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Metreweli joined MI6 in 1999 and currently serves as the Director General for Technology and Innovation, known internally as “Q”. She is widely regarded as a national security expert and has led several high-profile operations in the Middle East and Europe.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described her appointment as a historic moment, adding that it comes at a time when the UK is facing unprecedented security threats. He expressed confidence that under Blaze\u2019s leadership, MI6 will perform its duties even more effectively.<\/p>\n

Metreweli studied anthropology at Cambridge University, where she was also a member of the university\u2019s rowing team. She believes that understanding human behavior is a core trait of a successful intelligence officer.<\/p>\n

In a 2021 interview, she remarked, \u201cThe beauty of my work is that I spend every day thinking about how to prevent the maximum possible harm.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also held key roles at MI5, where she led operations against anti-state activities and oversaw the protection of the UK\u2019s critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n

In 2024, she was honored with the Order of St Michael and St George for her contributions to British foreign policy.<\/p>\n

Outgoing chief Sir Richard Moore welcomed her appointment, praising Blaze as an intelligent, experienced, and forward-looking leader with exceptional insight in technological fields.<\/p>\n
