The British government has decided to terminate the residency rights of European Union citizens who are no longer continuously residing in the United Kingdom, particularly those who have spent extended periods outside the country, marking a significant shift in post-Brexit immigration policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to reports from British media, this recent move is considered a legal step under the 2020 Brexit withdrawal agreement, through which the government is reassessing the status of individuals who do not meet the requirements for continuous residence in the UK.<\/p>\n

The decision to partially use travel data to determine periods of absence has raised several concerns, especially in light of a previous failure by HMRC, where inaccuracies in Home Office border data led to more than 20,000 parents being wrongly deprived of child benefits, drawing widespread criticism.<\/p>\n

The UK Home Office stated that the crackdown is primarily aimed at individuals who had obtained pre-settled status to live in the UK before Brexit, a status that applied to those who had been residing in the country for less than five years.<\/p>\n

Now, individuals who left the country more than five years ago may come under scrutiny, and their cases will be reviewed with consideration given to the reasons for their prolonged absence, along with appropriate safeguards.<\/p>\n

According to the latest Home Office figures, out of 6.2 million applicants for post-Brexit immigration status, around 1.4 million people still remain on pre-settled status, highlighting the broad impact of this policy.<\/p>\n
