Residents of South Asia are generally more accustomed to prolonged high temperatures, while Europeans are adapted to much cooler climates, making sudden heatwaves more dangerous.

Infrastructure and Building Design
Homes in South Asia are typically designed to improve ventilation and reduce heat. In contrast, many European buildings are built to retain warmth during winter, causing indoor temperatures to become dangerously high during extreme summer heat.

Hot Nights
One of the biggest challenges during the current European heatwave has been unusually warm nights. Without cooler nighttime temperatures, the human body has little opportunity to recover from daytime heat stress, increasing health risks—especially for older adults.

High Humidity
Humidity also plays a crucial role. When humidity levels are high, sweat evaporates less efficiently, reducing the body’s natural cooling mechanism and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Older Adults at Greatest Risk

Reports indicate that most of those who died were 65 years of age or older, as elderly people are generally less able to regulate body temperature during prolonged periods of extreme heat.

Experts warn that climate change is making heatwaves more frequent, longer-lasting and more intense, increasing health risks across Europe and other parts of the world.

A severe heatwave sweeping across Europe has claimed more than 1,000 lives in just a few days, despite temperatures of 35–40°C being common in countries such as Pakistan and across South Asia.
