Washington: US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing the renaming of Lake Ontario as \u201cLake America\u201d amid ongoing trade and tariff tensions between the United States and Canada, drawing a strong response from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump signed the executive order on Thursday, directing the US Department of the Interior to officially change the name of Lake Ontario to \u201cLake America.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is the second major body of water Trump has moved to rename since returning to the White House.<\/p>\n

US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller were present in the Oval Office when Trump signed the order.<\/p>\n

While signing the executive order, Trump said the United States was going to change the name of Lake Ontario and that the change would take effect immediately.<\/p>\n

Referring to his earlier move involving the Gulf of Mexico, Trump said the gulf and the lake had now been renamed, leaving the oceans as the remaining major bodies of water.<\/p>\n

He also suggested that the names of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans could potentially be changed.<\/p>\n

Under the executive order, Burgum and the Department of the Interior have been instructed to update the federal government’s geographic naming system to identify Lake Ontario as \u201cLake America.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new name is also expected to be added to the US government’s official database for geographic names and locations.<\/p>\n

Lake Ontario lies between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York.<\/p>\n

On his first day back at the White House, Trump had signed an executive order titled \u201cRestoring Names That Honor American Greatness.\u201d<\/p>\n

That order directed the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the \u201cGulf of America.\u201d<\/p>\n

The latest move comes amid continuing tensions between Washington and Ottawa over trade and tariffs.<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly rejected the decision, saying the name Lake Ontario predates both the US Declaration of Independence and Canadian Confederation.<\/p>\n
