Karachi: A fire safety assessment submitted by 22 government hospitals to the Sindh government has revealed serious shortcomings at several major healthcare facilities, including the absence of fire alarms, water sprinklers and other essential safety measures.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the report, Karachi’s 1,750-bed Civil Hospital has 180 functional fire extinguishers but lacks both fire alarms and water sprinklers. Its electrical wiring also requires repairs.<\/p>\n

Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, which has 2,208 beds, has 208 functional fire extinguishers but no fire alarms or sprinklers. Its electrical wiring also requires repairs, although regular fire drills are conducted at the hospital.<\/p>\n

At the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), 40 of the 135 fire extinguishers were found to be defective.<\/p>\n

The 533-bed children’s hospital has no fire alarm system, while fire drills are not conducted regularly. Its electrical wiring also requires extensive repairs.<\/p>\n

The 700-bed Lyari General Hospital has only 20 functional fire extinguishers and one fire alarm. It has no water sprinklers, while fire drills are also not held regularly.<\/p>\n

Qatar Hospital in Orangi has only 25 functional fire extinguishers and no fire alarm system.<\/p>\n

Saudabad Hospital has 18 functional fire extinguishers but lacks a fire alarm system and regular fire drills.<\/p>\n

According to the report submitted to the Sindh government, fire safety arrangements at the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre and Korangi Children’s Institute were found to be comparatively satisfactory.<\/p>\n

The SMBB Trauma Centre has 180 functional fire extinguishers, 45 alarms and 39 fire hydrants.<\/p>\n

Korangi Children’s Institute has 39 fire extinguishers and 39 fire balls, while its alarm system is operational and regular fire drills are conducted.<\/p>\n

At GMMC Hospital Sukkur, the safety exit of the children’s ward is not clear. The hospital has only 20 fire extinguishers and lacks both fire alarms and sprinklers.<\/p>\n

SIMS Hospital in Shahdadpur has only five fire extinguishers and no fire alarm system.<\/p>\n

LUMHS Hyderabad has 110 functional fire extinguishers but no fire alarms or sprinklers, while LUMHS Jamshoro has 32 fire extinguishers but also lacks alarms and sprinklers.<\/p>\n

Sehwan Institute has 45 functional fire extinguishers and four fire alarms, while regular fire drills are conducted.<\/p>\n

Different blocks of Chandka Medical College in Larkana have a total of 77 fire extinguishers, while Jacobabad Institute has 52 functional extinguishers and its overall fire safety arrangements were reported to be satisfactory.<\/p>\n

According to Sindh Health Department sources, fire safety data for NICVD, SIUT Karachi and Sukkur, and PUHMS remains incomplete.<\/p>\n

Fire safety information for Khairpur Medical College and Gambat is also incomplete, meaning the report does not provide a full assessment of safety arrangements at several major healthcare institutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
