Dubai: India Women refused to receive the Women’s T20 Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi after winning the final, leaving the presentation ceremony to conclude without the champions collecting their trophy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Naqvi was present on stage for the post-match presentation ceremony in Dubai, but the Indian players remained gathered outside their dressing room and did not come onto the field for the presentation.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was subsequently completed without the Indian team, while the ACC retained the trophy after the champions declined to receive it.<\/p>\n

According to ACC sources, if the Indian team wants to collect the trophy, it will have to receive it from Naqvi in his capacity as the council’s chairman.<\/p>\n

Sri Lanka Women captain Chamari Athapaththu, meanwhile, received the runners-up award from Naqvi during the ceremony.<\/p>\n

ACC sources said the trophy presentation protocol had been finalised in advance and the trophy was available to be presented to the winning Indian side, but the team itself decided not to receive it.<\/p>\n

The sources said the trophy remained available for collection, while Naqvi continued to stand by his previously stated position on the matter.<\/p>\n

According to the sources, Naqvi’s position is that cricket should be kept separate from political disputes and that the traditions and protocols of the sport should take precedence.<\/p>\n

The Indian team’s conduct has also drawn criticism in some cricket circles over sportsmanship.<\/p>\n

Sources said this was the second time within a year that a victorious Indian side had avoided receiving a trophy from the ACC chairman at a major cricket event.<\/p>\n

They added that the trophy not collected by the Indian team last year also remained available and was awaiting collection.<\/p>\n

Despite the latest development, ACC sources said the council’s position remained unchanged and it would continue to pursue its policy of keeping cricket separate from political disagreements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
