Israel approved a new plan on Sunday to expand settlement areas. These expansions will be established in the occupied Golan Heights region. This new decision by Israel is extraordinary in the current context of regime change in Syria.
Especially considering that just last Sunday, Israel took the position that it deployed its military in the buffer zone of the Golan Heights because it faces the threat of new fronts emerging in Syria’s war environment. At the same time, Israel does not feel the need to double its Israeli population on the occupied heights.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated, “Strengthening the Golan Heights is equivalent to strengthening Israel. We will continue to occupy it and make settlement possible there.”
After Gaza and Lebanon, Israel’s continuous airstrikes targeting Syria, bringing troops to the border, taking control of the Hermon mountain in addition to the buffer zone, and now choosing the Golan Heights for building new Jewish settlements, are signs of Israel becoming an increasingly dangerous force in the Middle East.
