The Sindh High Court has ordered the Sindh government to ensure the participation of all elected representatives, including the arrested Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in the upcoming Karachi mayoral elections scheduled for June 15.
In response to the Jamaat-e-Islami’s request to prevent the elected UC chairman from participating in the Karachi mayoral election, a two-member bench comprising Justice Yusuf Ali Saeed and Justice Abdul Rahman heard the case in the Sindh High Court.
The court session was attended by Jamaat-e-Islami’s lawyers, Usman Farooq and Saifuddin Advocate, as well as lawyers from the Election Commission and the Sindh government, including the Advocate General.
During the hearing, the Sindh government apologized for not being able to bring all elected representatives to the City Council on the day of the Karachi mayoral election. The Advocate General, addressing the court, stated that they cannot take responsibility for transporting all elected individuals.
The Jamaat-e-Islami’s lawyer informed the court that another UC chairman had also been arrested two days ago, and the police had harassed elected representatives in the City Council and towns. Elected representatives from the PTI are being prevented from participating in the mayor and town elections.
