Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, during a press conference, stated that if the agreement is not implemented, they may call for not submitting electricity bills.
He mentioned that the committees of Jamaat-e-Islami and the government have not been dissolved and will continue to review the progress of the agreement. During the press conference, he congratulated the entire nation on Arshad Nadeem’s achievement, as the national athlete not only won a gold medal but also set a world record.
He added that their sit-in was ongoing, and now an agreement has been reached with the government. The government has assured them regarding electricity prices, IPPs (Independent Power Producers), and taxes on salaries. Previously, the government was saying they couldn’t do anything, but now they will prepare a report on IPPs within a month.
Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman stated that in Pakistan, large landlords and feudal lords do not pay income tax, and while other parties don’t address this issue, they have made it a topic of discussion. Now, the entire burden of taxes will not fall on the poor and salaried class. They have also devised a mechanism for the implementation of the entire agreement, and it’s not just empty words.
He said that their movement is the guarantee for the implementation of this agreement. If the government does not fulfill the agreement, then they will ask people not to pay the bills. They are mindful of the country’s economy, but this will be a peaceful way to register their protest. Their sit-in continued for 14 days, and the government had to reach an agreement with them.
He credited Jamaat-e-Islami for making the government agree to review electricity prices. They informed the government about how electricity prices can be reduced and agreements with IPPs can be revisited. They also discussed how taxes on the salaried class can be reduced.
