Dr. Arif Alvi’s 5-year term as the President is set to end today, but he will not be stepping down from his position and will continue to fulfill his presidential responsibilities.
According to sources, Dr. Arif Alvi will not vacate the presidency even after completing his term. Last week, after crucial consultations with the nation, the President expressed his willingness to see through his duties until the election of a new President.
Dr. Arif Alvi’s five-year tenure of service is ending on September 9th. As per Article 44(1) of the constitution, Presidents serve a term starting from the date of assuming office for a duration of five years.
According to the constitution, upon the expiration of the term, the President will continue to hold office until the election of a successor unless a new President is elected.
The constitution also specifies that the person elected as President of the country will be eligible for re-election to the office once, but no one can hold the office for more than two consecutive terms.
It should be noted that despite the end of his term, President Arif Alvi will continue to exercise all the powers of his office, including the power to grant pardons, extend pardons, and suspend or remit any sentence given by any court, tribunal, or other authority.
