Adiala Jail Superintendent Sajid Baig has acknowledged that the prison is operating beyond its capacity, with approximately 8,000 inmates currently housed there.
Baig said overcrowding was a problem facing Adiala Jail and that the government was considering how to address the growing prison population.
He said the construction of a new prison in Islamabad would reduce Adiala Jail’s inmate burden by half.
The superintendent maintained that prisoners’ rights were not compromised and that judicial officers regularly visited the facility. He said six male doctors and one female doctor were stationed at the jail.
According to Baig, the prison provides ECG, ultrasound, dental treatment and other medical services. He suggested that some inmates might not have access to comparable facilities outside prison.
The superintendent also reported approximately 100 HIV cases at the jail. According to him, most inmates with HIV were already living with the infection before entering prison.
