Many people commonly use laptops by placing them on their laps, but an important question arises as to whether this habit can lead to any physical harm. Although the word “laptop” itself suggests use on the lap, medical experts indicate that prolonged usage in this manner may lead to certain health concerns or at least increase potential risks over time.
Laptops typically release heat from their lower surface, but when placed directly on the lap, the body partially blocks the heat dissipation. As a result, not only can the device overheat, but the accumulated heat may also affect specific parts of the body, potentially leading to adverse health effects.
For this reason, most manufacturers recommend placing laptops on a firm and flat surface where airflow is not obstructed, ensuring proper ventilation and maintaining the device’s cooling system. Inadequate airflow can also negatively impact the performance and lifespan of the device.
A study published in 2016 in the Journal of Biomedical Physics and Engineering found that placing a laptop on the lap may affect reproductive health, particularly increasing the risk of infertility in men. While such cases are not extremely common, the possibility cannot be completely ruled out, especially with prolonged and repeated exposure.
The research further noted that many electronic devices, including laptops, emit low-frequency radiation, which may have an impact on male reproductive health. Although more studies are needed to establish definitive conclusions, experts suggest adopting precautionary measures.
Apart from reproductive concerns, excessive heat from laptops can also be harmful to the skin. If the device becomes excessively hot, the damage caused by heat may be more immediate and severe than potential radiation effects. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can burn the skin or compromise its health.
Repeatedly placing a hot laptop directly against the skin may also lead to a specific skin condition in which discoloration occurs, potentially resulting in long-term marks. Therefore, experts advise avoiding prolonged use of laptops directly on the lap.
