Veteran Hindi and Marathi film actor Nana Patekar has died at the age of 75. According to Indian media, he was taken to a private hospital in Goa on Thursday morning, where doctors confirmed his death.
Reports said the actor was found unconscious at his Goa apartment after experiencing severe chest pain. Initial reports attributed his death to a suspected heart attack.
Citing information provided by his son, Malhar Patekar, Indian media reported that a medical team was sent to the apartment after the actor complained of severe chest pain. He was unconscious when the team arrived and was immediately transferred to hospital. Doctors confirmed his death at 5:20am.
Initial reports indicated that a post-mortem examination was expected that day to establish the precise cause of death.
Born Vishwanath Patekar, he was regarded as a distinguished and respected performer in Hindi and Marathi cinema.
He began his film career in 1978 and delivered memorable performances in numerous films, including Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan and Welcome.
He received three National Film Awards and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013.
In a tribute shared on social media, Shah Rukh Khan remembered Patekar as someone who never resorted to flattery. He said Patekar told people what they needed to hear rather than what they wanted to hear. Khan added that their affection for one another was mutual.
Recalling their first meeting, Khan said he felt intimidated by Patekar’s presence and began nervously playing with his hair. Patekar immediately moved his hand away and told him not to style his hair like a hero, reminding him that he was an actor.
Khan described Patekar as his teacher, mentor, critic and friend. He said his passing had left an irreplaceable void not only in cinema but also in the hearts of millions of Indians and people around the world.
He added that he would miss Patekar deeply and cherish his advice for the rest of his life: never lose the actor within while trying to become a hero.
Khan concluded by praying for peace for Patekar’s soul and Allah’s mercy, expressing his love and the profound sense of loss he felt.
