A serious wheat crisis is emerging in Balochistan, as the Food Department has completely run out of stock, while no procurement has yet been made for the 2024-25 season.
According to sources within the Food Department, wheat will not be available in the province from September 2025 to March 2026. It was revealed that the 2023 stock had been released with the approval of the provincial cabinet, but under the current circumstances, this supply remains highly insufficient. In response, the department has submitted a summary to the provincial government to tackle the crisis.
Sources further stated that the summary proposed the immediate purchase of 500,000 wheat bags either from PASSCO or from the Punjab government to avert shortages in the coming months. However, implementation of this proposal will depend on the final approval of the provincial cabinet.
Officials warned that if timely action is not taken, the wheat shortage could escalate into a full-blown flour crisis in Balochistan, with a sharp rise in prices also feared.
