Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry has described the Makkah joint defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye as a guarantee of regional peace and stability, saying its purpose is to defend Saudi Arabia and that the kingdom will be defended.
Speaking in an interview with a US broadcaster, the military spokesperson said Pakistani forces had been present in Saudi Arabia for decades, serving across various capabilities and fields.
He said the Makkah joint defence agreement was not an alliance that had emerged suddenly, adding that its implementation and implications would remain defensive in nature.
Lt Gen Chaudhry said operational commanders would decide how the agreement would be implemented, which contingents would be deployed and how the pact would be utilised.
Describing the agreement as a guarantee of regional stability, the DG ISPR said its existence would make elements with malicious intentions think several times before attempting to pursue their objectives.
He stressed that the agreement was not intended to designate any country as a friend or an enemy, but was aimed at defending Saudi Arabia, adding that the kingdom would be defended if required.
Speaking about the Iran-US war, Lt Gen Chaudhry said Pakistan was making efforts to bring the conflict to an end and facilitate an agreement between the parties, and would continue doing so.
He said Pakistan wanted differences to be reduced, a peaceful solution to be reached through negotiations and the conflict to be prevented from spreading further.
The military spokesperson said Pakistan had played an important and impartial role in efforts to secure a ceasefire between Iran and the United States, adding that Islamabad’s interest lay in regional peace and stability and that no party would benefit from an expansion of the war.
