Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami challenges amendments in municipal law ahead of mayor’s election.Jamaat-e-Islami has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court challenging the amendments made in the Municipal Act.
The petition argues that under the amended act, non-elected individuals have been granted approval to become chairpersons and mayors, contrary to the provisions of the municipal law, which require mayors to be elected representatives.
The petition requests the court to declare the notification issued on 24th May, which was enacted under the current amendments, as illegal. It contends that the notification violates the constitutional and governmental structure of both the federal and provincial governments.
