Sindh Assembly has passed the Sindh Regulation of Electric Power Services Bill 2023. Under the bill, the provincial government will now be able to produce, distribute and supply electricity itself.
The Sindh Assembly has approved the Sindh Regulation of Electric Power Services Bill 2023, which ensures the provincial government’s authority over the distribution of affordable electricity from its grid stations in the province.
Under the bill, the provincial government will have the power to generate, distribute, and supply electricity on its own, and it will also establish the Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (SEPRA) to enforce these regulations.
The SEPRA Authority will deal with all electricity matters in Sindh, apart from electricity supply and other matters with other provinces, and will be able to fix the tariff and price of electricity in the province, while also issuing licenses for generation and distribution of electricity.
After the establishment of SEPRA, no license pertaining to electricity in Sindh can be issued without consultation with the authority.
