The technical delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has arrived in Pakistan for negotiations on climate financing.
According to media reports, discussions are scheduled with the four-member IMF delegation alongside federal and provincial authorities, covering topics such as green budgeting, tagging of climate spending, tracking, and reporting.
For the upcoming fiscal year 26-2025, a proposal to impose a carbon levy is under consideration. During forthcoming negotiations with the IMF delegation, the initial draft will be discussed, and proposals regarding the imposition of a carbon levy will be provided by the IMF.
The IMF delegation will engage in technical negotiations with federal and provincial authorities until February 28. Discussions will also address the imposition of a carbon levy, electrical vehicles, and subsidies, with the IMF delegation proposing measures to expand green budgeting in the upcoming budget.
Today’s negotiations will focus solely on climate change measures, with a briefing on federal and provincial climate change initiatives.
