During Independence Day celebrations in India, a tragic incident occurred in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, where a traffic route was diverted to facilitate Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s convoy. As a result, a speeding vehicle ran over three students riding a motorcycle, killing 13-year-old Barkatullah on the spot.
According to international media outlet The Free Press Journal, the incident took place in the jurisdiction of Airport Police Station. Barkatullah had come to attend the Independence Day ceremony at Khan Stadium, while the Chief Minister’s convoy was on its way to Shaheed Smarak. Suddenly, a vehicle struck the students, leading to Barkatullah’s instant death, while his friends Pradeep and Mahavir sustained injuries.
Statement from the Deceased Student’s Sister
The victim’s sister, Komal, said that when the family reached the spot, they found her brother’s body lying on the road, while his friends were severely injured. She alleged that the police displayed apathy and did not respond to any of their pleas.
Police’s Preliminary Report
According to Indian media, the police’s initial report could not clarify whether the vehicle that hit the three boys was a dumper truck loaded with gravel, a bus, or a speeding car from the Chief Minister’s convoy. This uncertainty has further fueled anger among the victim’s family, who accuse the administration of gross negligence.
