Serious concerns have emerged at the federal level over the deteriorating security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and what officials describe as the provincial government’s failure to provide the political and administrative support required by law-enforcement agencies and security forces in the fight against terrorism.
According to informed sources, the ongoing wave of terrorism and growing political confrontation between the PTI-led provincial government and the federal government have made the situation a major concern for federal authorities.
Sources said the concerns were not limited to law and order. Government circles were also worried about increasing political confrontation with security institutions, including the armed forces, and political narratives that officials believe are targeting or weakening the role of security forces at a time when the province faces a serious militant threat.
The future of the PTI-led KP government is reportedly being discussed at the federal level. Various constitutional and political options are under consideration, although no final decision has been made.
Article 232, which allows the imposition of an emergency in certain situations involving war, external aggression or internal disturbance, is among the constitutional provisions being discussed. Article 234 deals with a situation in which a provincial government cannot be run in accordance with the Constitution.
Sources said the coming days, particularly in view of the PTI’s announced political programme for October 4, could be crucial in determining the federal government’s response.
Officials are concerned that continued agitation, confrontation and rhetoric against state institutions could further complicate the already fragile security environment. Sources said the situation was changing rapidly and that the coming days would determine whether political tensions were reduced or whether the federal government moved towards one of the constitutional options under consideration.
