Najam Sethi, who was leading the interim management committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has been ousted from the race for the chairman’s position.
Najam Sethi, who took over the responsibilities on an interim basis since December last year, is set to conclude his tenure on June 21.
In recent days, there was a sense of anticipation that Najam Sethi might also be a contender for the chairman’s position, and it seemed like there would be another clash between him and Ehsan Mani, who desires to return and become the PCB chairman, as seen in the exchange of views in the media.
However, the head of the management committee preempted any conflict and announced his withdrawal from the upcoming elections for the sake of avoiding any dispute and for the betterment of the board.
In a message on social media platform Twitter, he stated that he does not want to become the cause of a conflict between Shahbaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari. He further added that such instability and uncertainty are not suitable for the Pakistan Cricket Board.
He mentioned that he is not a contender for the position of PCB chairman under these circumstances and extended good wishes to all stakeholders.
Zaka Ashraf, who is affiliated with the Pakistan People’s Party, a coalition partner in the federal government led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, is currently being considered the strongest candidate for the chairman’s position.
Typically, in Pakistan, a member of the Board of Governors is selected as the chairman of the board, with the appointment usually made by the Prime Minister.
