Engineer Majid Al-Zahrah, supervisor of the Saudi Astronomical Society, has reported that today the sun was directly overhead the Kaaba. He stated that this was the first such occurrence this year. The event took place at exactly 12:18 PM Saudi time.
According to Abu Zahra, the sun was at 90 degrees due to which there was no shadow on the Kaaba and any sculptured buildings or other objects.
As the sun came over the Kaaba, a large number of citizens in different countries began to determine the direction of the Qibla.
In ancient times, the alignment of the sun directly over the Kaaba was used to determine the direction of the Qibla. A wooden stick would be planted in the ground, and the shadow it cast would indicate the opposite direction as the direction of the Kaaba.
