On the occasion of India’s Independence Day, members of the Sikh community held a strong protest outside the Indian Embassy in Washington, surrounding the building and chanting slogans. Protesters carried Khalistan flags and shouted slogans including “Down with India” and “Killer Modi.”
The Indian Embassy had organized a special Independence Day ceremony, but Sikh demonstrators arrived at the venue and encircled the embassy. During the protest, they tore the Indian tricolor flag into pieces and threw them in front of the building.
The protest left Indian diplomatic staff frightened, prompting them to call the police. Law enforcement officers remained at the scene for several hours to maintain order.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sandhu, head of the Khalistan Council, announced that a Khalistan Referendum would be held in Washington the following day. He said thousands of Sikhs were expected to cast their votes and declared that the day was not far when Indian Punjab would be liberated to form Khalistan.
