Karachi: The e-challan system, launched to modernize the traffic system in the city, has started yielding fruitful results in its initial phase.
According to the traffic police, under this new automated system, challans worth more than Rs. 12.5 million were issued to citizens in just 6 hours, which is proof of how common traffic violations are in Karachi.
Police officials said that after the launch of this system, violations of traffic rules are being identified through automatic cameras and digital monitoring, which has made immediate action possible without any human intervention.
According to the report, a total of 2,662 challans were issued in the first six hours. The highest number of challans, 1,535, were issued for not wearing seat belts, while 507 people were fined for riding motorcycles without helmets.
Similarly, 419 challans were issued for overspeeding, 166 for crossing a red light, and 4 for violating the stop line. Three drivers were also fined for not driving on the lane line.
In addition, the traffic police report said that action was also taken against those driving the wrong way, in which four people were issued challans. 7 for vehicles with tinted windows, 32 for using mobile phones, 3 for driving in the wrong direction, 5 for illegal parking, 5 for parking in a no-parking zone, and 5 for incorrect parking.
These statistics show that citizens consider traffic violations trivial, but now, thanks to the digital system, citizens will start following the rules.
A spokesperson for the Karachi Traffic Police said that the e-challan system is an important milestone for effective monitoring, which will play a fundamental role in improving traffic discipline. According to the spokesperson, citizens should abide by the rules themselves so that problems like accidents and traffic jams can be reduced.
Police say that no system can be successful without public cooperation, so citizens have been asked to fully comply with traffic laws and consider the e-challan system as a convenience, not an enemy.
