Human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha were arrested by police in Islamabad a short while ago.
According to details, the police stopped their vehicle near the Serena Chowk underpass and took both into custody, also confiscating their mobile phones during the arrest.
Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha were traveling from the Islamabad High Court Bar to the District Court and were seated in a vehicle belonging to the Islamabad High Court Bar Association. The president of the Islamabad High Court Bar, Wajid Gilani, and Manzoor Jajja were also accompanying them at the time.
It is noteworthy that Imaan Mazari and her husband had earlier announced that they would not withdraw from their stance. While speaking to the media, they stated that they would remain firm on their position and would not step back, even if it meant going to jail.
Earlier, the District and Sessions Courts Islamabad had ordered Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha to appear in person in a controversial tweets case. Subsequently, the Islamabad High Court, in a written verdict, set aside the trial court’s order.
The High Court’s decision stated that Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha should not be arrested in the present case. According to the ruling, both were granted four days to cross-examine witnesses, with the clarification that failure to appear before the trial court would render the order ineffective.
