Senator Raza Rabbani of the Pakistan Peoples Party questioned whether caretaker governments have the authority to make decisions regarding the population census.
Speaking in the Senate, Raza Rabbani said that the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has formed a committee to review the population census results.
He stated that they have requested a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) which will look into the matters related to the population census. Currently, the Chief Ministers of two provinces are members of the Council of Common Interests. So, can the Chief Ministers decide on the population census?
He further added that the CCI will discuss the population census, and Sindh has concerns about it.
Raza Rabbani emphasized that the caretaker’s role is limited to conducting transparent and fair elections. If the caretaker government decides on the population census, it will create further controversies.
In this regard, the Attorney General, Nazeer Tarar, said that it is being considered necessary to place the matter of the population census before the constitutional institution.
It should be noted that for the approval of the results of the Digital Population Census 2023, a meeting of the Council of Common Interests has been requested, which is scheduled to take place on August 5th.
