OGDCL has achieved a significant milestone by making the largest oil and gas discovery in Pakistan’s history at the Baragzai X-1 well located in the Nashpa block of Kohat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and has now officially commenced commercial production from the well.
Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik inaugurated the commercial production and stated that this achievement marks a major step forward for Pakistan’s energy security, which will not only enhance domestic resources but also help save approximately 329 million dollars annually in foreign exchange. He added that new discoveries will strengthen national reserves and reduce reliance on imported fuel.
According to the official statement issued by OGDCL, the Baragzai X-1 well is being regarded as the largest oil and gas discovery in the country’s history, while the discoveries in Kohat represent a major exploration success for Pakistan. The statement noted that the well is currently producing around 15,000 barrels of oil per day along with 45 million cubic feet of gas, with plans to increase production to 25,000 barrels per day and 60 million cubic feet of gas in the future.
The statement further mentioned that the project was developed in one of the most challenging terrains of the country, where OGDCL ensured efficient and safe operations through the use of advanced technology. As a key operational achievement, an 8-kilometer pipeline was laid in record time, reflecting the efficiency and pace of the project.
It was also stated that Baragzai X-1 has become the highest-producing well in Pakistan’s history within OGDCL’s portfolio and is contributing approximately 10 percent to the country’s total crude oil production, marking a major boost for the national economy.
