Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of winning the FIFA World Cup ended once again as Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Spain produced a relatively stronger performance in the match played in Dallas, registering 15 attacks compared with Portugal’s 10.
The match featured a battle between young star Lamine Yamal and experienced Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo. Yamal repeatedly troubled Portugal’s defence and created opportunities for his teammates, but Spain failed to convert their chances.
The first half ended goalless, while both teams also struggled to find the net during regular time in the second half.
In the first minute of injury time, Spain produced a decisive attacking move and Mikel Merino scored to give his team the lead.
Spain maintained the advantage until the final whistle, securing a 1-0 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.
Just like the previous World Cup, Ronaldo’s dream of becoming a world champion remained unfulfilled as he left the field in tears.
Spain will now face either Belgium or the United States in the quarter-finals.
