The hearing on the petitions against the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Bill will be held today. Lawyers for the petitioners will present arguments on the Judicial Reforms Act today.
An eight-member larger bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, will hear an important case today regarding petitions filed against the Practice and Procedure Bill. The bench includes Justice Ejaz-ul-Hasan, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Mazahar Naqvi, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha Malik, Justice Azhar Hassan, and Justice Shahid Waheed.
Apart from the Attorney General, Supreme Court Bar Association, and Pakistan Bar Council, the Supreme Court has also issued notices to nine political parties, including PML-N, PTI, and PPP.
On April 13, the Supreme Court’s larger bench had stayed the implementation of the approved law.
The petitioners’ lawyers will present arguments today on judicial reforms in the law.
It should be noted that Parliament had passed the bill restricting the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s power to take suo moto notices and limiting the powers of the benches. However, the Supreme Court has stopped its implementation through a stay order against the law.
