On May 14, the Supreme Court had issued an order for holding elections in Punjab. However, despite the deadline passing, the court order could not be implemented, and the federal government and the Election Commission could not act upon the court’s directive.
On May 3, the Election Commission had filed a review petition against the court’s decision. The Election Commission had objected to the court setting a date for the elections and had argued that the authority to decide the election date lies with the Supreme Court.
