Afghanistan: A police spokesman said that two people, including Balkh Governor Muhammad Dawood Muzamal, were killed in an explosion this morning.
Police spokesperson Asif Waziri said that the blast occurred during an administrative meeting and no group has yet claimed responsibility.
The police commander said in a statement that an assailant attacked with a suicide jacket on the second floor near the governor’s office in the provincial building.
Dawood Muzamil is one of the highest-ranking Taliban officials to be killed since the Taliban regained power in August 2021.
He was initially appointed governor of the eastern province of Nangarhar, where he led the fight against ISIS.
