Minhaj Qazi, the security chief of MQM’s central office, Nine Zero, who was arrested in 2016, has been released after spending eight years in prison.
He was incarcerated in connection with the murder case of former KESC MD Shahid Hamid. Yesterday, the anti-terrorism court acquitted him by giving him the benefit of the doubt.
On May 22, Minhaj Qazi was admitted to Jinnah Hospital on court orders, from where he has now been officially released following the court’s verdict. The court also acquitted another accused in the case, MQM worker Mehboob Ghufran.
The decision was announced by the anti-terrorism court established in Central Jail Karachi. The court declared Minhaj Qazi and Mehboob Ghufran innocent due to a lack of evidence and contradictions in witness statements.
It is worth noting that in the same case, MQM activist Saulat Mirza had been sentenced to death for murdering Shahid Hamid in 1997 through a targeted shooting.
