NEPRA has rejected K-Electric’s appeal and maintained a 19% reduction in the company’s average basic tariff. However, around 3.5 million consumers in Karachi will not receive any direct benefit in their electricity bills.
Following the decision, K-Electric’s average basic tariff will remain at Rs32.37 per unit, which is Rs7.60 lower than the Rs39.97 per unit approved in 2025.
The revised tariff includes approximately Rs27.83 per unit for electricity purchases, Rs2.40 for transmission and Rs2.90 for distribution. It also includes a credit of around Rs0.78 per unit in supply costs.
K-Electric had challenged the tariff reduction decision, but the appellate tribunal rejected the company’s appeal.
The matter began on May 27, 2025, when NEPRA approved an increase of Rs6.15 per unit in K-Electric’s tariff, raising it to Rs39.97 per unit for the 2023-24 financial year.
K-Electric said NEPRA had issued notifications regarding its October 20, 2025 decisions, but the order had not yet been formally received by the company. The spokesperson claimed that the tribunal appeared not to have considered the arguments presented by K-Electric’s counsel.
According to the company, the decision could have highly negative effects on its multi-year tariff for the 2024-2030 control period. K-Electric said it was awaiting the written order and would consider all available legal options after receiving it.
