The growing adoption of hybrid vehicles in Pakistan has led to significant fuel savings and a positive impact on the national economy. Over the past two years, hybrid electric vehicles have helped the country save approximately $27 million in oil import costs.
Data shows that more than 30,000 hybrid vehicles were added to Pakistani roads during this period, collectively saving around 30 million liters of fuel. Experts estimate that if hybrids capture 25–30% of the total auto market, the savings in fuel imports could rise substantially in the coming years.
Lucky Motor Corporation (LMC) CEO Muhammad Faisal said the growing popularity of hybrid vehicles reflects consumer confidence, citing their fuel efficiency, easy maintenance, and better resale value compared to fully battery-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Pakistan’s annual auto market, including cars, SUVs, vans, and pickups, sells between 180,000 and 200,000 units, with hybrid SUVs now accounting for more than 50% of the segment in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026.
Since 2021, 13 new electric models have been launched in Pakistan, including nine hybrid vehicles produced by Korean, Chinese, and Japanese assemblers. Faisal noted that all major manufacturers have invested heavily in local hybrid production, achieving up to 35% localization in models such as Sportage and Picanto.
He added that hybrids reduce carbon emissions by up to 40% compared to traditional petrol vehicles. Unlike fully electric cars that depend on external charging, hybrids generate their own power and can function effectively in rural areas where charging infrastructure and electricity supply are limited.
Faisal emphasized that hybrid vehicles offer a practical and cost-effective transition toward clean mobility for a developing economy like Pakistan. Although hybrids cost 15–20% more than petrol cars, their long-term savings in fuel, lower maintenance expenses, and strong resale value make them an attractive alternative for consumers.
