The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) says it has uncovered alleged wealth statement fraud involving Rs9.41 billion and launched 48 criminal investigations across Pakistan.
According to the FBR, taxpayers unlawfully declared assets through changes to older wealth statements. A criminal case has also been registered in Lahore under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010.
The authority said a detailed analysis of data identified retrospective changes to the wealth statements of 85 taxpayers for tax years 2014 to 2019.
According to the FBR, these individuals declared cash, gold, prize bonds, property and business capital in their older wealth statements between March 2025 and June 2026.
The FBR stated that the law does not permit revisions to wealth statements more than five years after the prescribed deadline for filing the original return. However, all the identified cases involved changes made after that period had expired.
In one Lahore case, the FBR said a taxpayer declared fictitious funds of Rs102.8 million in May 2026 by revising a wealth statement for tax year 2015. The amount was carried forward through subsequent wealth statements up to 2025 and used to purchase seven properties in May and June 2026.
According to the authority, the seven properties were worth more than Rs64.4 million. During questioning, the taxpayer failed to explain the source of the allegedly fictitious funds.
The FBR said this case alone involved an alleged attempt to evade more than Rs46 million in tax.
The authority added that 48 criminal investigations had been initiated nationwide, while action in the remaining cases was continuing. Alongside the case registered in Lahore under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010, proceedings were also underway against other individuals allegedly involved in facilitating the fraud.
