Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei has criticized the European Union’s position, describing its statement against Iran’s right to self-defense as hypocritical and irresponsible.
Speaking at a press conference, Baghaei said that recent US military actions constituted a violation of the ceasefire, and Iran’s retaliatory actions against locations used for those attacks were carried out under its right to self-defense.
He stated that negotiations have been prolonged due to repeated changes in position and new, contradictory demands from the opposing side. He added that negotiations do not necessarily imply trust between the parties, and no formal discussions on the nuclear issue have taken place at this stage.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the European Union should uphold the rule of law and the principles of the United Nations rather than blaming countries that respond to unlawful attacks.
According to Baghaei, targeting military bases and assets used to launch attacks against another country falls within the legitimate right of self-defense. He stressed that states have a responsibility not to allow their territory or resources to be used for attacks against other nations.
He further said that a lack of trust and changing circumstances regarding US and Israeli actions in Lebanon have contributed to delays in the diplomatic process. According to him, a ceasefire in Lebanon would be an essential part of any agreement aimed at ending the conflict with the United States.
Baghaei also called on Kuwaiti authorities to provide clarification as soon as possible regarding four Iranian citizens currently in custody.
