Islamabad: Pakistan has rejected India’s claims regarding occupied Jammu and Kashmir, saying unilateral actions by New Delhi cannot alter the disputed status of the territory.
Responding to questions regarding an Indian statement, the Foreign Office spokesperson said Pakistan rejected what it described as baseless Indian claims over occupied Jammu and Kashmir, adding that the Kashmir dispute remains one of the oldest unresolved issues on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council.
The spokesperson said that under UN Security Council resolutions, the future of Jammu and Kashmir is to be determined through a plebiscite by the Kashmiri people, held under United Nations supervision and in accordance with their wishes.
The Foreign Office said official UN maps also depict Jammu and Kashmir as disputed territory, arguing that India’s official maps and unilateral claims of sovereignty have no legal standing.
Pakistan also called on India to immediately end what it described as human rights violations in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
The Foreign Office urged the international community to press India to fulfil commitments regarding the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination and ensure that the right is respected in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
