Islamabad: Consumers in Pakistan are paying significantly more than the base cost of petrol and diesel due to taxes, levies and margins, with petrol selling Rs133.02 per litre above its actual cost and high-speed diesel Rs122.55 higher.
According to official documents, a total of Rs131.60 per litre is being collected on petrol in the form of levies, taxes and margins, while the corresponding amount on high-speed diesel stands at Rs122.55 per litre.
The documents show that the base cost of petrol is Rs234.73 per litre, while its current retail price has been set at Rs367.75 per litre.
According to the Petroleum Division, petrol prices have increased by a total of Rs21.88 per litre over the past three days, while diesel has become Rs14.62 per litre more expensive during the same period.
Petrol was priced at Rs345.87 per litre on September 7 and has since risen to Rs367.75 per litre.
Similarly, high-speed diesel stood at Rs378.05 per litre on September 7 and has now increased to Rs392.67 per litre.
