Karachi: Protests by workers of a religious party in several parts of Karachi led to severe traffic congestion and partial internet disruptions across the city.
According to police officials, the protests were mainly concentrated around New Karachi, Power House, Anda Mor, Sindhi Hotel, and 4K Chowrangi. Demonstrators attempted to block roads and carry out stone-pelting and arson, prompting the police to respond with tear gas shelling to disperse the crowd.
Deputy Inspector General West, Irfan Ali Baloch, said that police forces reached the spot promptly and brought the situation under control. Traffic flow was restored in New Karachi, Sindhi Hotel, and 4K Chowrangi areas, while five individuals involved in rioting and vandalism were arrested.
The DIG further stated that additional police contingents have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incidents amid fears of further protests or violence.
Police officials assured that the overall law and order situation in the city remains under control. Citizens have been urged not to believe in rumors and to avoid unnecessary movement towards affected areas.
