Excessive Cleanliness May Weaken Immune System, Experts Warn

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, hygiene and sanitization practices have increased worldwide; however, medical experts are warning that excessive cleanliness may prove harmful to the human immune system.

According to new scientific research, a completely germ-free environment can weaken the body’s natural immunity, as the immune system requires a certain level of exposure to microbes to function effectively.

What Does the Hygiene Hypothesis Say?

The scientific theory known as the hygiene hypothesis suggests that during childhood, a reasonable level of exposure to germs and environmental elements is essential, as this process helps train the immune system to fight diseases.

Research has shown that children who have less exposure to natural microbes in early life are at a higher risk of developing allergies, asthma, and autoimmune diseases.

Disadvantages of Excessive Sanitization

Experts state that frequent use of hand sanitizers, antibacterial sprays, and unnecessary cleaning can also eliminate beneficial bacteria in the body, which are essential for gut health and immune function.

In urban lifestyles, excessive avoidance of germs has also been linked to food allergies, digestive issues, and weakened immunity.

Adults Also Affected

Studies published in scientific journals indicate that complete avoidance of germs not only affects children but also weakens the immune systems of adults.

Experts warn that an unrealistic fear of germs, excessive cleanliness, and repeated use of sanitizers may increase the risk of allergies, asthma, and autoimmune disorders.

Overuse of Antibiotics

Experts also highlight that the unnecessary use of antibiotics for common illnesses can disrupt the body’s microbiome, leading to an imbalance in the immune system.

Why Balanced Hygiene is Important

Medical experts emphasize that instead of adopting a completely germ-free lifestyle, it is important to maintain “balanced hygiene,” where cleanliness is practiced while allowing reasonable exposure to natural environments.

Experts advise washing hands with soap and water instead of relying excessively on sanitizers, avoiding unnecessary use of disinfectant sprays, engaging in outdoor activities and gardening, and maintaining a diet that supports beneficial bacteria.

According to health experts, cleanliness is important, but excessive hygiene can be harmful, as the human body does not require complete isolation from germs but rather a balanced exposure to maintain a strong immune system. The goal is not a germ-free life, but a balanced and informed lifestyle.
