US President Donald Trump has announced the removal of sanctions imposed on Türkiye and also signalled his willingness to approve the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Ankara.
Trump made the announcement during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
The United States imposed sanctions on Türkiye in 2020 under the CAATSA law after Ankara purchased the Russian S-400 air defence system.
The sanctions included restrictions on US export licences and the supply of defence equipment to Türkiye’s Presidency of Defence Industries.
Assets of then-SSB chief Ismail Demir and other Turkish defence officials were frozen, while visa restrictions were also imposed on them.
Restrictions were also placed on certain loans and financial assistance from US financial institutions.
President Trump also indicated his willingness to approve the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Türkiye.
Meanwhile, Israel has urged the United States to reconsider any decision to allow Ankara to rejoin the F-35 programme.
