US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran and the United States had agreed on a deal on Saturday, but within an hour of the talks ending, Iran launched a drone attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
In an interview with NBC News, Trump said Iran had agreed to abandon all outstanding issues and that it was an excellent deal for the United States.
He said the agreement included Iran giving up its nuclear programme.
According to Trump, the Iranian delegation left the negotiating room and within an hour carried out a drone attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US president said Washington responded forcefully by launching overnight airstrikes against Iran.
Trump also criticised Iran, saying its leadership had an “extremely dangerous mindset.”
He added that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for commercial shipping.
Speaking about the death of his close ally and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, Trump said he had spoken to him by phone just hours before his passing on Saturday night.
Trump said Graham appeared fine apart from being tired and described his death as sudden.
