US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing a 50 percent tariff on several Canadian products, with the new measures expected to take effect within the next 30 days.
According to a US newspaper, the tariffs will apply to a range of goods, including wine, hockey-related products and cement.
President Trump claimed that Canada has been treating American alcohol, automobile and dairy products unfairly, describing the tariffs as a response to discriminatory trade practices.
The report said the Trump administration is relying on a provision of the US Trade Act of 1930 as the legal basis for implementing the new tariffs.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the move, calling it a unilateral decision and reaffirming Canada’s commitment to free and transparent trade.
In his statement, Carney said Canada remains ready to negotiate with the United States to resolve the months-long trade dispute, while warning that his government would take all necessary steps to strengthen and protect the country’s economic interests.
