The Afghanistan United Front, an anti-Taliban resistance group, has announced the start of armed operations against Afghanistan’s Taliban government.
In a video statement, the group’s chairman and former Afghan general Sami Sadat said that permission had been granted to begin military operations and that the first phase of the campaign was already under way.
According to Sadat, the group’s operations will target Taliban members, facilities and senior leaders. Appearing in an Afghan military uniform, he also stated that the organisation would fight al-Qaeda, Islamic State, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant groups.
The former general argued that nearly five years after the Taliban’s return to power, efforts to reach a political settlement through negotiations had failed.
He also called on Afghans living both inside and outside the country to unite and support the campaign.
The Taliban government has not yet issued an official response, and the claims made by the group have not been independently verified.
