The Washington Post has reported that tensions emerged between US President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over reports of declining ammunition stockpiles during the conflict with Iran.
According to the newspaper, President Trump questioned the defense secretary during a meeting at Camp David about why he had not been fully informed about the situation.
Citing two unnamed sources, the report said Trump expressed frustration after learning that shortages of military supplies had not been resolved as previously believed.
The report added that limited stocks of long-range guided missiles and air defence interceptors were among the factors that influenced the administration’s decision not to launch broader military operations against Iran.
Sources quoted by the newspaper claimed that Hegseth defended his position and attributed some of the responsibility to Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg.
The report also stated that Hegseth had been among the officials who strongly supported military action against Iran and had expressed confidence in the outcome.
However, both the White House and the Pentagon strongly rejected the claims.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the report as false, while Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the allegations regarding internal disagreements and ammunition shortages were entirely unfounded.
The claims have not been independently verified.
