Lahore: The Punjab Assembly has passed a resolution seeking a ban on the use of social media by children under the age of 16.
The resolution was moved by government lawmaker Sarah Ahmad and called for effective legislation to protect children from the potential harmful effects of social media.
According to the resolution, protecting the physical, mental and moral development of children is the responsibility of the state, while inappropriate content on social media is exposing minors to psychological stress and other risks.
The resolution noted that several countries have introduced measures aimed at restricting social media use among underage children.
It cited Australia, France, China and several US states as examples where laws and restrictions concerning children’s access to social media have been introduced.
The resolution stressed that Pakistan also needs effective legislation to ensure a safer future for children.
It further called on the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to introduce an effective age-verification system across social media platforms.
